Three people were killed in the shootings – two civilians and officer Garrett Swasey, a member of the police force at the University of Colorado’s Colorado Springs campus who had gone to help.
CBS News Denver reports that Robert Lewis Dear cried out his guilt in the middle of court, while his attorney was discussing whether or not cameras should be allowed in the courtroom.
There was increased security at the El Paso County Courthouse for his hearing.

It was the first in-person appearance in court for Mr. Dear since his arrest on November 27 after the attack on the clinic, which left three people dead and nine wounded. Dear’s public defenders seemed to be shaken by the outbursts, especially when he accused them of trying to drug him up.
“Let’s let it all come out”, he said. There will be no trial”, and “Seal the truth, kill the babies.

Suthers, who served as state attorney general and USA attorney for Colorado before he was elected mayor in May, said he didn’t know whether the gunman was targeting officers.
The Gazette reported that Dear was due back in court on December 23.
A motive in the shooting has not been released, but Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said it was motivated by an opposition to abortion and decried “hateful rhetoric” and “hatred and vitriol that fueled this tragedy”.
He also accused his defence team of being in “cahoots” with Planned Parenthood to “shut me up”. Other Planned Parenthood employees and their clients were ushered to safety by responding police officers.
