Victims To Speak After Ex-Oklahoma Cop Convicted
A former Oklahoma City police officer was found guilty of crimes including rape and sexual battery by a jury on Thursday in a case where prosecutors said he preyed on women who had trouble with the law, hoping their word would not stand up against his. He was acquitted of 18 other charges.
They also prayed for Holtzclaw, asking God to help him find peace and help him realize that what he did was wrong.
According to NBC News, Holtzclaw burst into a sobbing fit when the verdict was read. Jurors deliberated for more than 40 hours over four days.
“Do we think there’s another serial rapist in the Oklahoma City Police Department?”
“We are satisfied with the jury’s decision and firmly believe justice was served”, it said. Sentencing is set for January 21.
Holtzclaw’s father – a police officer in Enid, about 160 kilometres northwest of Oklahoma City – his mother and sister were in the courtroom as the verdict was read. “Yet, inclusion of Black women’s experiences in social movements, media narratives, and policy demands around policing and police brutality is critical to effectively combating racialized state violence for black communities and other communities of color”.
Figaro, who works in public relations, says her mother was the news director assistant at Oklahoma City’s Channel 4 for 15 years. For now, we have some measure of justice; Holtzclaw is going to jail.
Benjamin Crump, president of the National Bar Association, was also monitoring the case. We do not know if they were the same women who were forced to come to court in jailhouse shackles. Two alternates have Spanish surnames.
That is a suitable reaction to every aspect of the Daniel Holtzclaw case. Prosecutors would not comment on the jury composition. During cross-examination of the prosecution’s witnesses, his attorney questioned why most of the women didn’t come forward until police identified them as possible victims.
Bill Citty said in a statement Thursday night that the trial of former officer Daniel Holtzclaw was “long and difficult” for all involved. And as the report, “Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women”, by the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) highlights, black women are exceptionally vulnerable to being the target of these assaults. All his accusers are black.
Holtzclaw allegedly pulled one woman over in her vehicle and suspected her of drunken driving.
“He was aggressive, he was vigilant, and he was honest”, Adams said.
Shortly after the verdict was read, a press conference was announced with victims, lawyers and local activists, in front of the courthouse where Holtzclaw was tried and convicted.
When asked why she did not tell the police, she said, “What is the good of telling on the police? Before I came here, I smoked some marijuana and a blunt stick laced with PCP”, The Oklahoman reported. Detectives connected her assault to a previously unsolved report, then discovered Holtzclaw’s pattern of sexual abuse.
Holtzclaw, a native of Enid, Okla., played linebacker at Eastern Michigan University and was invited to rookie camp by the Detroit Lions in 2009.
The case is significant at a time when the public seeks accountability and justice for the criminal behavior of law enforcement.
The grandmother whose allegations led authorities to launch an investigation into ex-Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw was in the courtroom as he was convicted of assaulting her.
