Groups promise lawsuit if governor proceeds with watch list gun ban
“If you can’t fly without clearing government watch lists, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun”, said Malloy.
Two state lawmakers want to do what Congress won’t do – keep suspected terrorists from getting guns.
Pro-Second Amendment activists in CT are gathering steam to oppose a plan by Gov. Malloy to apply the no-fly list to gun sales and ownership in the state. Those with existing permits who are found to be on those watchlist would have their permits revoked, and if a new match is found, the permit would be denied and the purchaser would be unable to purchase handguns, shotguns, rifles and ammunition.
A spokesman said that the governor planned to issue an executive order on the issue, and is working directly with the White House to gain access to the no-fly lists. “Without even going to the legislature I don’t think it’s the politically proper thing to do and I don’t think it would withstand legal scrutiny”, said Sen.
Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, comes one day after Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy announced his intentions to use executive power to ban people on those lists from buying guns. “Since Congress so far has failed to act, we will”, Governor Malloy said. “And today I’m here to say that ‘Connecticut, we are seizing that moment'”.
Scott Olson/Getty Images Republicans in Congress have blocked legislation to address the terror gap. In the interim, other states should follow Connecticut’s lead.
Although Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, the attackers who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, did not appear on any watch lists, the massacre renewed the push to curb gun sales nationwide. “And it’s time to do something about it. It’s time for right-thinking people to stand up”.
“The disregard of due process in placing people on the no-fly list without a notice or an opportunity to be heard and then using that status to deny constitutional rights is the most obvious constitutional violation inherent in the governor’s announcement”, Baird told the Connecticut Law Tribune. This violates so many of our laws and rights as Americans is sickening.
