Netflix Leads Networks In Golden Globe Nominations
Scotland-set Outlander, too, got a more welcome lift, landing nominations both as a series and for lead Catriona Balfe.
In an awards season that has so far seen honors spread around, Tom McCarthy’s “Spotlight” came into the Globe nominations as the Oscar favorite.
The nominees for best screenplay are Steve Jobs, Spotlight, The Hateful Eight, Room, and The Big Short.
The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced the list of contenders for the 73 annual Golden Globe Awards on December 10. They’re awesome in those movies.
The best TV drama category has been blown wide open, with “Empire”, “Mr. Robot”, “Narcos”, and “Outlander” all receiving their first nominations.
And yet both studios are campaigning for the actresses in the supporting actress category, not in lead roles.
Previous recipients of the Spotlight Award include J.K. Simmons, Julia Roberts, Jessica Chastain, Amy Adams and Helen Hunt, all of whom received Oscar noms in the year they were nominated. She was previously nominated for her work on “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and the film “Enough Said”. Whether or not that campaign strategy will backfire for the Oscars remains to be seen.
If there was any doubt streaming services were having a moment in a big way this year, the Golden Globes let it be known.

Only Jon Hamm, in the dramatic actor category, was nominated. Smith, whose last few films have performed badly with critics and at the box office, gets a big lift with this nomination. Cracking the limited series field was a longshot, but recognition for stars Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn or Rachel McAdams wasn’t out of the question. “Birdman” eventually edged out “Boyhood” for the best picture Oscar. But when it comes to television’s supporting acting category, that streamlining virtually guarantees that essential performances don’t even make it onto the ballot.
FX’s “The Americans”, which seems to singularly suffer the role of best stealth drama (having been ignored for almost every award in its three seasons, other than the prestigious Peabody), maintained that status by escaping Globes notice again this year.
George Miller got nominated for best director for “Mad Max: Fury Road”, and “Room“, an adaptation of the novel by Emma Donoghue, helped star Brie Larson get a nomination for best actress in a drama. Carol, the romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes is leading the board.
Lady Gaga has won her first Golden Globe nomination, and the singer-actress celebrated the news by screaming in her apartment in NY. Until now, it was getting tons of attention at smaller award shows. Fox, shut out last year, landed four nominations this year, as did ABC.
