Georgia Southern’s Willie Fritz to become new Tulane head coach
It continues a track record of persistent winning for Fritz, who has won more than 72% of his games in more than two decades as a head coach.
Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein announced Friday that Willie Fritz has accepted the head coaching position at Tulane University. He has led the Eagles to a 17-7 mark in those two seasons. His team is headed to the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile to play Bowling Green on December 23rd.
Fritz joined Georgia Southern after four seasons at Sam Houston State, where he went 40-15 in regular season games and coached the Bearkats to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in three straight seasons, advancing to the 2011 and 2012 championship games.
Fritz’s overall coaching record is 154-69.
While Georgia Southern has traditionally run an option-oriented offense – a tradition Fritz maintained – he is not tied to the scheme.
Tulane fired Curtis Johnson after the Wave finished 3-9 in 2015. Pierce ended a six-year NCAA regional drought this past spring in his first season with the Green Wave. Under Dannen’s direction, Tulane will try to reverse its recent history of 11 losing seasons in the last 13 years.
