Alabama’s Henry wins Camp, Maxwell awards

Many have wondered if Clemson sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson would opt to leave after next year, his junior season, to try the NFL.

Watson was the one, Deann said, who brought home the Habitat for Humanity flier that helped the family leave public housing for a home of their own. Now, he’s regarded as one of the top players in the country, but he said whether or not he wins the Heisman, it won’t define who he is.

Henry also earned the Doak Walker Award as the top running back.

McCaffrey, who has proven that he is one of the best players in college football, recognizes that he does not fit the typical white running back stereotype. The sophomore quarterback totaled 36 touchdowns (27 passing, nine rushing) and was the only player in the nation with at least 3,000-plus passing yards and 750-plus rushing yards.

Part of why Clemson has achieved vast success in 2015 is due to the outstanding play of their quarterback Deshaun Watson.

McCaffrey can run in traffic – he leads the country in runs of 10-plus yards against boxes containing eight or more defenders this year – and he can deliver in space, a skill evidenced by his national top-10 rank in kick return average.

Deshaun Watson is the best player at the most important position playing for the best team.

Walker’s Sugar Bowl production, meanwhile, still puts him 11 yards behind Henry’s 1,986 yards through 13 games.

“I was just fortunate enough to have so many people in my family who have gone through as college athletes”, Christian McCaffrey said of his family’s football lineage. In the installment published Tuesday – one day after the voting closed – Henry held a slight advantage over McCaffrey.

Watson always felt that if he played solidly and the team was successful, individual honors would follow.

Henry hasn’t thought of what he will say in his speech should he win the award.

“He’s the best player in the country”, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said after Watson had 420 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns in the Tigers’ victory over North Carolina in the ACC title game.

And while it shouldn’t count toward the Heisman, it should be noted that McCaffrey is also an Academic All-American, too. He has posted 1,741 yards this season, an LSU record. All three would be worthy Heisman winners.

McCaffrey’s father, Ed, played wide receiver for the Broncos from 1995-2003, but based on the celebration (Christian has a Sharpie in his sock), Christian’s real childhood football idol was Terrell Owens. “Win or lose, I’m going to have fun and embrace the moment”.

The university has plans for several to be in attendance for Saturday’s Heisman Trophy ceremony, including UA President Stuart Bell, Director of Athletics Bill Battle, UA Chancellor Robert Witt, head coach Nick Saban and running backs coach Burton Burns. “It’s not a conference record”. “And I was happy to see him go back in”.

You want a “Most Valuable Player”?

Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey can run the ball, catch the ball, return the ball and even throw the ball (he has two touchdown passes this season).

McCaffrey finished second in the nation to Alabama’s Derrick Henry with 1,847 yards rushing.

That’s potentially significant because McCaffrey was at less than his best in two games against Midwestern teams: Only 66 yards rushing at Northwestern and no runs or receptions longer than 14 yards against Notre Dame.
