Henry, Watson and McCaffrey selected as 2015 Heisman finalists
Mark Ingram of Alabama in 2009 was the last running back – and only Crimson Tide player – to win the Heisman.
The other players invited to NY for the award ceremony are Alabama running back Derrick Henry and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. Saturday’s game against the Trojans provided a snapshot of exactly what McCaffrey is all about: 461 all-purpose yards -207 rushing, 105 receiving, 120 kick return and 29 punt return – and three touchdowns.
And it has been quite a year for Henry, who now owns single-season team records for rushing yards and touchdowns, as well as the SEC record for rushing yards, breaking Herschel Walker’s previous record of 1,891 yards.
Henry, who has scored touchdowns in a nations best 18 consecutive games, has averaged 180.9 yards against seven ranked opponents.
For the season, Watson has 3512 passing yards with 30 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
The 81st annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Presentation will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. CT in New York City. No one else below him had more than 211.
“You win the Heisman in November, got to win 10 games”, Dennis Dodd, CBSSports.com’s national college football reporter, said earlier this year.
200-YARD CLUB: Henry’s 200-yard games certainly left an impression on voters, and he tied an SEC record with four of them.
Watson is looking to continue the 5 year trend of signal callers taking home the trophy, and he had a brilliant season in the attempt.
Henry is joined by Clemson quarterback DeShaun Watson and Stanford running back and return specialist Christian McCaffrey.
Here’s a quick look at the three finalists, one of whom will be announced Saturday night in NY as the Heisman victor.
Watson’s dual-threat ability is a big part of the reason why the Tigers remain undefeated and sit at #1 in the College Football Playoff final rankings.
PRO PROSPECTS: A junior, Henry is widely regarded as the second-best running back who could be available in the 2016 draft behind Ohio States Ezekiel Elliott.
Now quarterback Deshaun Watson is on the popular magazine’s cover for the second time in less than a month. In his second season with the Cardinal he has rushed for 1847 yards and 8 touchdowns and caught four more touchdowns while gaining 540 yards in the air.
This year’s race for the Heisman stands in stark contrast to recent years, in that the three-person field is headlined by two running backs.
Watson threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 131 yards and two scores to set ACC Championship records for total yards and touchdowns.
Watson was second on the team in rushing with 887 yards. In 2013, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston clearly emerged as the best player in college football (on the best team) over the course of the season.
Tide coach Nick Saban said Henry arrived on campus with the same work ethic thats carried him to the brink of a Heisman.
Derrick Henry’s Heisman case is stronger than, well, Derrick Henry.
