Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater says defense attorneys for an ex-Oklahoma City police officer convicted of rape were responsible for ensuring there was an all-white jury considering the case. She came forward as a victim after reading a news item about Holtzclaw on Facebook previous year, she said. Prater said his objections were overruled by the judge.
Scott Adams, Holtzclaw’s defense attorney, declined to comment after the verdict was read. Holtzclaw is described in official documents as “Asian or Pacific Islander”, according to News OK; all of the victims in the case are black. Bill Citty said in a statement Thursday night that the trial of former officer Daniel Holtzclaw was “long and difficult” for all involved. “We also conduct interviews and psychological evaluations to determine their character and suitability for the job”, Balderrama said.
Holtzclaw was sacked before the trial began.
Holtzclaw’s conviction largely stems from his one “mistake”, as prosecutors put it – the mistake of stopping J.L. “And then when you have the authority on top, it becomes an issue of danger in a different way because the vulnerable people in our community, the vulnerable women, are so accessible to police officers”. Zimmerman was acquitted of murder charges in 2013.
She was sitting in his patrol auto when he unzipped his trousers and moved toward her. “No sir”, she pleaded. “The jury was able to see through that”.
She says she feels like justice has been served.
Holtzclaw was convicted of assaults on eight victims, including a grandmother in her 50s and a 17-year-old.
Crump said other women had earlier called police about Holtzclaw, so “we need to find out how aggressive they (police) were” in their investigation. She said she was pulled over for no reason and as she was begging the officer not to make her do what he was asking for. Brown was killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014.
In a rare move, Henderson allowed television cameras inside the courtroom to broadcast the verdict live.
All 13 women Holtzclaw was charged with assaulting testified in the trial. Another testified that she never told anyone because she had “never been on the right side of the law”. She said Holtzclaw picked her up as she walked home one night in June 2014, and then walked her to the porch, where he told her he had to search her. She said he grabbed her breasts, then pulled down her pink shorts and raped her. Her DNA was found on his uniform pants. In all, 13 women stepped forward and testified to assaults by the former officer. A jury recommended that he be sentenced to 263 years in jail.
Holtzclaw, a college football star who joined law enforcement after a brief attempt at pursuing an NFL career, rocked back and forth, sobbing in his chair, as the verdicts were read.
Holtzclaw was ordered into custody.
Franklin and others outside the courtroom in Oklahoma City regarded the wait for the jury’s decision as a hopeful sign they were carefully considering each count.
An investigation found that he ran background checks on women, preying on those he found had outstanding warrants.
Holtzclaw’s youngest accuser was 17 at the time of the attack. “It just as if this were a group of 13 white women”.
