Armed Suspect Surrounded at Arkansas State University, Officials Say
Jonesboro police identified the man as Brad Bartelt, 47, of Jonesboro. She faces a charge of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. “Officers in process of securing vehicle now”, the Jonesboro Police Department said on its Twitter feed, without providing further details.
He also had a 100 gallon propane tank in the back of his truck and a container of gasoline in the cab, which Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliot said he splashed on the truck at one point during the hour-long standoff. No one was injured and shots were not fired in the incident. Once police apprehended Bartelt, the university lifted its lockdown for most of the campus, but still canceled final exams set for Thursday afternoon and evening.
“He said that they did not treat him right and pay for certain expenses and bills resulting from the injury”, the report states.
“When we arrived he was threatening himself, so obviously he was despondent over something”, Elliot said.
A police detective testified on Friday that Bartelt repeatedly threatened to shoot the propane canister, and had doused his truck with gasoline before eventually surrendering. “The Arkansas State community remains strong and we’re safe, thanks in large part to the quick action and cooperation of our law enforcement officers and safety personnel from the campus, the city, the region and the state”, ASU Chancellor Tim Hudson said in a statement.
An affidavit says Bartlet told police he was “seeing demons in the woods” around his house.
In a Facebook status posted Wednesday, Bartelt said he was “suicidal and now homicidal”, referencing what he said was an effort from the Social Security Administration to falsify medical records “over 22 times”.
Elliott said at a Thursday news conference that Bartelt never pointed a weapon toward officers.
A tweet shared by the university reads, “Report of an active shooter spotted at the student union”.
John Miller, a junior at Arkansas State, told the Arkansas Democrat Gazette in a phone interview that he was taking a test in the humanities building when he saw through a window a green pickup drive onto the lawn in front of the union.
