Sigourney Weaver films cameo scene for Doc Martin (From Swindon Advertiser)
The South African filmmmaker has shared some new concept art, featuring Sigourney’s alter-ego Ripley. However, the most recent installments of the franchise, Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, didnt exactly set the world on fire. “It’s like making Alien meets the Wolfman“. And even though Fox had talked internally about pitting the two franchises against each other, they still managed to squeeze out the 1997 Alien: Resurrection beforehand.
He broke the tapes of these movies when he was a kid, he watched them so much.
When Alien vs. Predator hit theaters in 2004, it did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel in 2007, but was generally panned by critics and fans alike.
As someone who was looking forward to seeing an ALIEN VS. PREDATOR movie, my response to “Why?” would be that it could have been incredibly cool…
The script for AVP began development in 1991, about a year before “Alien 3” would be released, but Weaver reveals that Scott would’ve returned to the director’s chair for “Alien 3” as well if that other movie wasn’t happening. How it got a sequel, we’ll never know. And, Weaver added, it also deterred franchise creator Ridley Scott from returning to direct another film. But the movies, while financially successful, aren’t very good and Alien star Sigourney Weaver thinks the idea “caused more problems than it was worth”.
She may be right about that, but now that things are back on track for the Xenomorph series, might Ripley finally be getting a happy ending in Blomkamp’s sequel?
What’s interesting here is that Weaver is acknowledging that Alien3 was supposed to be the final film in Ripley’s arc, and that she perpetuated her demise.
Ridley Scotts 1979 sci-fi film Alien is one of the scariest movies ever made.
