Heisman Finalist Christian McCaffrey, Now College Football All-American
Watson will be joined Saturday night’s ceremony in NY by Derrick Henry of Alabama and Christian McCaffrey of Stanford.
Later that night, McCaffrey had 461 all-purpose yards with touchdowns running, receiving and passing as Stanford beat Southern California in the Pac-12 title game and Watson had 420 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns in Clemson’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship game win against North Carolina.
Henry, a junior from from Yulee, FL, had four games of more than 200 yards and leads the nation in rushing with 1,986 yards on 339 carries. Cook finished with 1,876 total yards, and his average of 7.86 yards per carry ranks sixth in the country, better than Henry, Elliott and Fournette.
Henry, considered the favorite for the trophy, shared the Alabama workload previous year.
Over the 2015 season, Deshaun Watson has completed 69.5% of his passes, throwing for 3,512 yards and 30 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, while also running for 887 yards on 163 attempts and 11 touchdowns.
New York’s Downtown Athletic Club on Monday formally named three finalists for the 2015 Heisman Memorial Trophy, two of whom will take the field in the College Football Playoff next month.
On Thursday, Watson will go to Atlanta for the College Football Awards show where he’s a finalist for the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien Award, Bourret said. McCaffrey isn’t far behind with 1,847 rushing yards of his own.
Alabama tailback Derrick Henry has all but locked up the Heisman Trophy. He surpassed Barry Sanders’s 3,250 all-purpose yards from 1988, but in more games, so there’s a glowering asterisk, but then again, Barry Sanders. When the times looked tough for Clemson, Watson was routinely cool under fire and never cost Clemson in a critical situation. Ingram is the school’s lone Heisman victor (2009).
The Heisman Trophy isn’t simply about numbers, but Henry’s numbers don’t lie.
Wilbon also added, “Race is always a factor and [McCaffrey] would’ve received so much more publicity, McCaffrey, who has an incredible family in history of achievement in sports in America, if he wasn’t white”.
Over the past few weeks, though, Clemson has utilized Watson’s legs more with four 100-yard rushing efforts in the last five games.
Henry’s play along with a stout defense earned Alabama a return trip to the College Football Playoff as the No. 2 seed.
If they win, the Tigers will head to the National Championship game where they’ll play the victor of the Cotton Bowl (#2 Alabama or #3 Michigan State). Just like the actual Heisman ballot, SI.com’s People Heisman ballot awards three points for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vot and one point for a third-place vote. And if there’s a Heisman candidate that has meant the most to their team, it’s Deshaun Watson. All three of the finalists have a legitimate chance to win this award, and each of their candidacies is different.
