Tuesday Question: Who’ll Win The Heisman?
Henry joined Clemson sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford junior running back Christian McCaffrey as Heisman ceremony invitees.
Henry got a career-high 46 touches in Alabama’s 29-13 win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl and led the Crimson Tide to their third SEC Championship in four seasons, as well as a second consecutive berth in the College Football Playoff. The last running back to win the Heisman was Alabama running back Mark Ingram.
Here’s a quick look at the three finalists, one of whom will be announced Saturday night in NY as the Heisman victor.
LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield did not receive a nomination. He accounted for five touchdowns in a 45-37 win over North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game, giving him 41 touchdowns passing and rushing. QB Deshaun Watson Watson isn’t just the quarterback of the top-ranked Tigers, college football’s last remaining unbeaten team.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Derrick Henry made a quick impression on his Alabama teammates upon arriving on campus as a coveted prospect with everything from his hardcore weight room workouts to those middle-of-the-night pushup sessions.
The Heisman Trophy isn’t simply about numbers, but Henry’s numbers don’t lie. In second place for the Heisman trophy voting is, Derrick Henry. He had 1,847 yards and eight touchdowns rushing, 540 yards and four touchdowns receiving and 1,042 yards on kickoff returns.
Meanwhile, Stanford head coach David Shaw was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award.
At the very least, McCaffrey is college football’s most versatile player.
“You win the Heisman in November, got to win 10 games”, Dennis Dodd, CBSSports.com’s national college football reporter, said earlier this year. Another stat to note, Henry broke the great Herschel Walker’s record for single season SEC rushing yards. In just his senior year at Valor, McCaffrey ran for 1858 yards and 27 touchdowns, as well as grabbing 39 passes for 721 yards and 16 more touchdowns. In 2013, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston clearly emerged as the best player in college football (on the best team) over the course of the season. With two losses, Stanford will instead play fifth-ranked Iowa in the Rose Bowl.
Where would Henry be on your ballot if you were a Heisman voter? He scored 23 touchdowns to lead Alabama to an 11-1 record and its second straight Southeastern Conference championship.
Now, most years, there’s one candidate who appears to be above the rest, but this year’s Heisman vote could be one of the closest in recent history. He may not have accrued more yardage or touchdowns than the other two, though a quarterback like Watson has an inherent advantage in always having the ball in his hands, but he definitely put them in positions to win every game.
