Netflix dominates Golden Globe noms in TV with 8 nods
The nominees for best actress in a TV comedy series are: Rachel Bloom, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”; Jamie Lee Curtis, “Scream Queens”; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”; Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin”; Lily Tomlin, “Grace and Frankie”.
“Carol”, the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young shopgirl in the 1950s, garnered five nominations including best drama film, director, score and acting nods for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. She is vying for best actress in drama movie for her role in “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress in motion picture for her role in “Ex Machina”.
In the race for best comedy or musical film are “The Big Short”, David O. Russell dramedy “Joy”, space blockbuster “The Martian”, zany caper “Spy” and Amy Schumer’s breakout film “Trainwreck”. Netflix’s Narcos was also nominated for best television series in the drama category.
Michael Fassbender’s turn as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is also a strong contender in this category and so is Bryan Cranston’s performance in the role of a blacklisted Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo in “Trumbo” and Will Smith for sports thriller “Concussion“.
In total, digital originals account for 12 nominations at this year’s Golden Globes, nearly double from last year’s list.

Among the streaming shows nominated were Amazon’s Transparent (three nominations); Netflix’s Orange is the New Black (two), Narcos (two) and House of Cards (one); and Hulu’s Casual (one).
Nominations list in television this year is dominated by streamers.
Caitriona Balfe was nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama series for her role in “Outlander”, which was nominated for best drama..
In the best foreign movie category, four European films and one from Latin America made the cut – “The Brand New Testament” (Belgium/France/Luxembourg), “The Club” (Chile), “The Fencer (Finland/Germany/Estonia), “Mustang” (France) and “Son of Saul” (Hungary)”.
In other film news of geeky interest, The Martian received a nominee for best motion picture in a comedy/musical.
Overall, “Transparent”, “Mr. Robot”, and “Outlander” land three nominations each and so do FX’s “Fargo”, BBC’s “Wolf Hall”, and ABC’s “American Crime”.
Although more high-profile than the SAGs, the Golden Globes are seen as less of an indicator of Oscars glory, as a relatively small group of non-US journalists – the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) – chooses the winners, rather than the industry itself.
The awards, to be hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be handed out on January 10 here.
