Columnist breaks leg as Iowa St. fans rush court
Iowa State guard Monte Morris hit a jumper to give his team an 83-82 lead with 10 seconds left in the second half, capping a 20-point rally to keep the Cyclones’ record an unblemished 8-0.
The frivolity of fans storming the court after a college basketball game took a dark turn Thursday when a Des Moines Register columnist sustained a broken leg. He went into surgery late Thursday night.
Peterson tweeted early Friday that he believed he locked legs with someone. Peterson has reportedly suffered a broken leg, according to the publication. Those (students) have been camping out here for three days.
It is unclear whether or not the Big 12 will levy a punishment on Iowa State.
Iowa State: The Cyclones were as sloppy with the ball as they’ve been all season in the first half, committing 10 turnovers in the first 16 minutes…. “I think this one stole the show for my career right now”. “That’s awful. But, my thing, I was trying to go see my wife, to be honest with you”.
I wrote about this last February – after a court-storming at Kansas State almost led to an incident following the Wildcats’ win over Kansas. His shots galvanized the team and the home crowd at moments when it looked like Iowa State was ready to fold, and all of this was coming off the bench. “They did a really good job capitalizing on our mistakes”.
However, there is some credence to debating the practicality of court storming when it comes to safety issues. Fans rushed the floor at Hilton Coliseum and Peterson was injured while heading to the postgame press conference. That shot was set up by a very intelligent backwards tip by Jameel McKay, who knew at the time there was too much traffic for him to bring the board down himself.
Up next, Iowa plays Drake in Des Moines next Saturday and Iowa State faces Northern Iowa, also in Des Moines, next Saturday.
