Rangers’ ‘special powers’ likely to be extended by Monday: Chandio
The minister said it was clear that some forces were trying to derail the Karachi operation, which had been initiated after a thorough political consensus and had been highly successful in achieving its goals.
“If things do not change, then I will present some options on behalf of the federal government”, he further warned.
Speaking at a press conference here, he said the provincial government did not want to create hurdles in the way of ongoing operation against criminals and terrorists in Karachi, adding that the operation will continue with the assistance of Rangers.
He stressed that the Karachi operation should not be made controversial and well-disciplined, patriotic and professional force of Rangers should not be ridiculed.
The special powers allow them to conduct raids, detain and interrogate suspects for up to 120 days.
Raza went on to say that the issue of extending Rangers’ special powers must be resolved in the Sindh Assembly if there were reservations prevailing over it.
It has been a week since the special policing powers of Rangers in Karachi has come to an end after a four-month extension given to them in August.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has also earlier called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad and discussed country’s overall security situation.
The AKTI statement appreciated the role of the Rangers towards the law and order in the metropolis.
The interior minister said the provincial government had for years extended Rangers” powers via executive notifications and questioned the “sudden’ need to consult the assembly on the matter.
Sindh Chief Minister’s Information Adviser Moula Bux Chandio urged the federal government to be watchful over the issue pertaining to Sindh’s Rangers special policing powers.
