I wrote Ben Carson a note after talk of brokered convention
Donald Trump at Pufferbilly Days Rally in Boone, IA on 9/13/15.
Politico reported Trump has mused a third-party run in recent weeks as backlash continues over his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. “I’ve been hearing about these closed door meetings, and I don’t like that”. This is the exact scenario that many grassroots activists have been concerned about and are simply exhausted of – the party establishment driving the nomination process. Winning over delegates during those subsequent votes is where the brokering comes in. In other words, somebody that they don’t support. If that means blowing up the party, they will blow up the party. The base is absolutely fed up with the establishment already. I wouldn’t run as a third party. I suspect that is the case.
Other Republicans might agree but haven’t come out and said it.
If the report is accurate, Carson said, “I assure you Donald Trump won’t be the only one leaving the party”. They truly can not stand the notion of a nominee like Trump who is a straight talker and is politically incorrect.
At least one attendee at the private dinner, which is a regular gathering of leading Republicans in Washington, told The Associated Press that suggestions of manipulation by party leaders were dramatically exaggerated.
Ben Carson isn’t waiting to see what happens next summer when Republican Party delegates gather in Cleveland to nominate their standard-bearer in the race for the White House.
He said that he is “prepared to lose fair and square” and stressed that he would support the eventual GOP nominee if he loses in the primary. “But I will not sit by and watch a theft”, he added. I intend on being the nominee. “I would support any reasonable idea to find a better nominee”. But Salmon said he has a bigger problem with the current primary system, where the late-voting Grand Canyon State has little ability to help pick the nominee.
“I would certainly hope that they wouldn’t do such a thing, I would hope that they would respect the will of the people”, Carson told reporters.
Adam Brandon, the CEO of FreedomWorks stated that the GOP is playing with fire with this kind of talk.
The extent, to which the Republicans are willing to go in order to put one of their members in office is representative of how incongruent their policy is with the wishes of the American public, and should be a wake-up call to their supporters to reconsider being a part of their party.
Trump, who targeted Carson as his success briefly appeared to threaten the mogul’s, continues to hold first place on both averages, as well as in New Hampshire.
Spokesman Doug Watts said Carson was appalled at reports suggesting that Republican leaders were trying to manipulate the party’s presidential nominating process. It is also translating into higher poll numbers among Republican voters.
