Digital projects shine amid Golden Globes nominations

Carol, the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young shopgirl in the 1950s, will contend for best drama opposite Pioneer-era movie The Revenant, psychological thriller Room, Catholic Church abuse probe Spotlight and action thriller Mad Max: Fury Road.

A Globes nomination can give a show, film or actor not only a bump in audience, but an edge in Hollywood’s crowded awards season.

Just three years after digital platforms plunged into original content television for the first time, Netflix landed a leading eight nominations for its shows and actors, ahead of usually dominant premium cable channel HBO.

Soon after the Golden Globe nomination was announced, Lady Gaga took to Twitter on Thursday to post, “I apologize to my neighbours I ‘m still screaming in my apt in NY!”

Fellow streaming video outlet Amazon snagged five nominations (up from two last year) and Hulu scored its first.

Traditional networks ABC, CBS and Fox meanwhile combined for a paltry nine nominations.

VOD favorites favorites, and past Golden Globe winners, such as Transparent, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards once again claimed high-profile nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Ruffalo, however, was nominated for best actor in a comedy for his performance as a bipolar father in “Infinitely Polar Bear“.

Ricky Gervais will return as host for the Globes when it airs on NBC on January 10.

The Globes nominations were announced a day after the Screen Actors Guild award contenders.

Though some questionable category decisions left less humorous films competing for best comedy or musical, two of comedy’s top stars will crash the party: Melissa McCarthy and Schumer. Here’s a rundown of all the surprise series that wound up in major categories. Truthfully, I think all the nominations do. The ballast of Globe nominations this year went to films that evinced more interest in understatement than staking a claim on the outer edges.At their best, they sacrificed nothing by way of vision or ambition. The Revenant and biopic Steve Jobs also landed four nominations each. Also surging was Adam McKay’s finance farce “The Big Short“, which earned four nominations, including best picture, comedy, and nods for Steve Carell and Christian Bale. Room, an independent film based on the best-selling novel of the same name, is also up for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

In the best animated film category, the Charlie Kauffman-scripted, stop-motion drama “Anomalisa” slotted in alongside a quartet of more family-friendly releases: “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.

The best actress in a TV series- comedy contenders are Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Rodriguez, Lilly Tomlin, Grace & Frankie, besides Louis-Dreyfus. It has a total of seven nominations, down from 15 previous year.
