Reigning downhill and Super-G World Cup champion Vonn has won 25 career Super-G World Cup races, a record for men or women.
“Mission accomplished”, Shiffrin said, according to media in Lake Louise.
The third World Cup win of the weekend for Lindsey Vonn didn’t matter quite as much to the speed queen as rounding off her career victory tally to a solid 70. Shiffrin finished a respectable 15th.
Austrians Tamara Tippler and Cornelia Huetter were second and third. The margin of victory was the largest in a women’s super-G since 1997, according to information provided by the U.S. Ski Team.
The back-to-back wins put her atop the downhill standings with 200 points to 140 for Huetter after two races as she bids for an eighth World Cup crown in the discipline over the past nine seasons.
Vonn captured both downhill races over the weekend to help her earn the hat trick.
The American also swept all three Lake Louise races in 2011 and 2012, and has 18 career wins at the venue in 41 starts. She was hurt in a 2013 training run barely two weeks before Lake Louise, reinjuring her right knee, and settled for 40th and 11th in downhills and fifth in the Super-G. I feel like there were some people that doubted whether I could win today, especially because Lara had won the last couple races here in super G. Also my technician made some bets with people, so I felt a little bit like I had to come through. In third place, 20 points from Svindal, is today’s sixth, Travis Ganong. Laurenne Ross was 12th, Shiffrin 15th and Stacey Cook 17th.
“That kind of helped because it pissed me off”, she said. “I had to push hard and it is a good result, I am super happy about it. The first part of the course wasn’t easy”.
“I think (course conditions) were a little bit better than I expected”, said Vonn, who’s from Vail, Colorado.
“I’m psyched that she’s around and it’s nice to have another face on the speed tour”.
“I think the good thing is I’m feeling more confident in being aggressive”, Yurkiw said.
“I watched her run and I thought she did really well”, Vonn said.
The strength of the Canadian women’s ski team shifted in recent years from speed events to the technical races of slalom and giant slalom.
