United States subscription VoD service Netflix is leading the field with eight nominations for next year’s Golden Globe Awards – more than any traditional TV network.
One notable Golden Globes snub was for Johnny Depp’s performance as Boston criminal Whitey Bulger in “Black Mass”, which earned him a best actor SAG nomination.
Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, organizers of the Golden Globes, recognized a slew of new acting talent, such as Rachel Bloom, 28, star of the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, who landed her first major nomination.
As for older male actors, terrific performances by Sam Elliott as a spurned lover in “Grandma” and Michael Caine as an acclaimed composer reflecting back on his life in “Youth” were also overlooked.
The nominees for best drama series include only Fox’s breakout hit “Empire” among broadcast networks, plus USA’s “Mr. Robot”, Netflix’s “Narcos”, Starz’ “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones” on HBO. Last year’s NBC telecast dipped slightly from 2013’s 10-year high, drawing 19.3 million viewers.
The nominees for best motion picture comedy or musical are The Martian, Trainwreck, The Big Short, Joy, and Spy. The answer is not too shabby: Amazon racked up three nominations for its groundbreaking comedy-drama Transparent and two for its classical music-inspired series Mozart in the Jungle, and Hulu scored a nom for the first time ever for its new original show Casual.
Other notable absentees on the nomination rolls were HBO’s fading “Girls” as well as “True Detective” (which, after landing four nominations in its premiere season, was critically lambasted for its second cycle). In current years, “Argo” and “12 Years a Slave” each gained the most effective drama film Golden Globe and went on to win one of the best image Oscar. “Trumbo” topped that list with three nods, including best ensemble cast and best lead actor for Bryan Cranston.
Netflix’s flagship political thriller “House of Cards” earned one nod, for best actress contender Robin Wright. According to tweets from Australian film critic Simon Miraudo, the Globes’ official Twitter account kept misidentifying presenter America Ferrera as Gina Rodriguez. A four-time Oscar nominee (and one-time Globe winner), DiCaprio is gunning for his first Academy Award.
