Veteran actress Charlotte Rampling has been a big part of the best actress conversation for her work in the affecting marital drama “45 Years”, but was locked out of the best actress, drama category, possibly because Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett were both nominated as leads in “Carol”.
“Brooklyn” star Ronan is nominated in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture category for her role in the best-selling film based on the book by Wexford author Colm Toibin.
The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced the list of contenders for the 73 annual Golden Globe Awards on December 10.
Alicia Vikander, best actress nominee for “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress nominee for “Ex Machina”: “To be considered amongst all these brilliant actresses and their outstanding performances is such an honour”.
This year’s Golden Globe nominations have the streaming leader Netflix dominating, as the New York Times reports here. Second spot in the list is shared by “The Revenant”, “The Big Short” and “Steve Jobs” with four nominations each.
Apart from “Carol”, the other best motion picture drama nominees are “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, harrowing kidnap tale “Room” and “Spotlight”, which recounts the Boston Globe’s investigation into sex abuse in the Catholic Church. The announcement comes as yet another indication of who might be up for an Oscar this year following Wednesday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.
Rather, the Globes’ lead actor group features Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs”, Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl” and Will Smith for “Concussion”. Christian Bale and Steve Carell each received nominations for Best Actor for the film.
Hulu won its first nomination (best comedy series) for its new comedy, Casual.
“Game of Thrones”, a top victor at this year’s Emmys, received only one nomination- the best television drama series.
It will compete with blockbuster space adventure “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, inspired by the story of the woman who designed the household Miracle Mop.
In the best foreign movie category, four European films and one from Latin America made the cut – “The Brand New Testament” (Belgium/France/Luxembourg), “The Club” (Chile), “The Fencer (Finland/Germany/Estonia), “Mustang” (France) and “Son of Saul” (Hungary)”.

Out of Netflix’s three nominated shows, Orange is the New Black and Narcos rounded up two nominations per program, while the dramas House of Cards and Bloodline and the comedies Master of None and Grace and Frankie each received one. The show will air on NBC.
