Mark Richt passes on UVa., to become next Miami Hurricanes head coach
Also unclear: If Richt, as had been expected, will coach Georgia in its bowl game.
Richt said he hasn’t made any decisions yet on who will be on his staff.
Brian Schottenheimer and Jeremy Pruitt will continue in their roles as the offensive and defensive coordinator, respectively, for the bowl game.
“I’ve asked Bryan to assume all administrative duties of the head coach”, athletics director Greg McGarity said. Though they are bowl bound, the Bulldogs again missed out on the conference title game.
I’ve always said, one day I wanted to be a coach….
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has rebuild the Seminoles in part by poaching some of the best players from the Miami area, including running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Dalvin Cook.
Mark Richt will be introduced as Miami’s new coach on Friday morning.
If Alabama, which is now ranked No. 2, knocks off No. 18 Florida in Saturday’s SEC title game in Atlanta, it is a shoo-in to land in the Top 4 of the final College Football Playoff rankings.
Kirby Smart, Alabama defensive coordinator and a former Georgia safety, has been picked by the Bulldogs to be Richt’s replacement.
Coach Richt is the definition of a class act, always doing things the right way and turning these young football players into quality men.
Plenty of college football coaches have gone this route before so it’s not a total surprise, especially considering Smart and the Crimson Tide could be playing for a possible national championship. Richt said on Monday that “about five” schools had already contacted him.
Richt was sacked Sunday at Georgia despite being second all-time in coaching victories at the school. However, he did address the reports after Wednesday’s practice, saying, it’s not his “position to confirm any of this stuff, and I really can’t confirm it”.
However, Richt is coming from the SEC East, which was nearly equally terrible (that SC win over North Carolina sure looks puzzling now, huh?) and he was never able to get a program with an wonderful recruiting base, off-the-charts fan support, great facilities, the SEC tag and much more than Miami offers over the hump.
In 15 years leading the Bulldogs between the hedges, he compiled a 145-51 win-loss record, pretty damn impressive if I do say so myself. “If they were to lose and if they were just going to a bowl game, that would change the picture”.
