Australia’s Men’s Sevens team will battle a hostile crowd in their Cup quarter-final against South Africa in the Cape Town Sevens.
Host South Africa was beaten 14-12 by Kenya in its second match to dent its prospects of progression, but tries by Juan de Jongh and Ryno Benjamin secured a 10-0 victory over England in its final match and second place to Kenya in Pool B.
“We are in the Cup quarters where we wanted to be, but things just did not happen for us today”.
The Kenyans proved to be a hard nut to crack, as they also drew with England in their opening pool B match.
“They are probably the best balanced team in the world”, the interim coach said ahead of Sunday’s finals.
“We showed a real hunger to both save points and support our teammates when line-breaks were made”.
Commenting on the changes, Powell said: “Injuries are part and parcel of the game and it’s unfortunate that we have lost both Cecil and Werner”.
Elsewhere, series leaders Fiji and Australia were the only two sides to win all three of their matches at a sold-out Cape Town Stadium, with the second round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series throwing up lots of thrills and spills in front of 55,000 fans.
New Zealand suffered defeat to Canada for only the second time in history but Gordon Tietjens’s side bounced back to top Pool D with a 19-10 win over Samoa to set up a quarter-final with Argentina.
Wales (21-14) and an in-form United States (26-21) on Saturday to top Pool C and set up the clash with South Africa, who have won the past two events in their home country.
