Man arrested after ASU standoff has bond set at $50000
The man accused of pulling onto the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro with a gun was in court Friday afternoon.
The university reported an “active shooter” via its alert system about 1:33 p.m. Thursday after reports that a man drove a green Chevrolet pickup truck onto the lawn of the university’s Carl R. Reng Student Union.
A former student at ASU’s Newport campus, Bartelt was taken into custody about an hour after he caused a lockdown. Campus activities are to resume Friday and a graduation ceremony set for Saturday will go on.
Bartelt had previously attended classes at Arkansas State’s Newport campus, which is 45 miles away from the main campus in Jonesboro. Police didn’t offer details about the case.
“He was pointing the gun at himself”.
The school has kept the lockdown in place as police investigate the scene, it said on its Twitter feed.
The leader said that, when he arrived, Bartelt the shotgun visible as well as was sitting in the truck with his foot out the window, crying something inaudible.
But police later said that he had been holding a shotgun under his chin and threatening himself, according to the Associated Press, citing university police.
Elliott said investigators were still interviewing Bartelt to learn more about his reasons and he would be screened by mental health professionals.
“Everybody was responding exactly the way they were supposed to”, Ott said.
“As police served a search warrant at Bartelt’s house, they said they found a loaded AR-15 with ammunition, large hunting knives and shotgun ammunition inside the home”. In the post, Bartelt referred to the Social Security Administration, according to a police report that also noted Bartelt was seeking medical attention.

“I never meant to hurt anyone but myself”, Bartelt said in court. Arkansas State says tests that were scheduled for Thursday night will be administered next week.
At that point, Miller ran with several women to the library as police and SWAT team officers began descending on the campus, he said.
At the ASU campus, Chancellor Tim Hudson issued a statement Friday commending the strength of first responders, students and staff after Thursday’s incident.
Back in 1998, an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old opened fire at Jonesboro’s Westside Middle School, killing a teacher and four students.
