Texas upsets No. 3 UNC with superb buzzer beater
North Carolina’s Roy Williams believes the key to beating Texas Saturday is simple – the No. 3 Tar Heels (7-1) have to shoot their shot. Now the betting odds for the game have the Tar Heels favored to pick up the road win.
With the score tied and just seven seconds left after the Tar Heels ran a flawless play to get even with the Longhorns.
ABOUT TEXAS (5-3): The Longhorns appear to have bought into new coach Shaka Smart’s defensive philosophy, holding opponents to 37.3 percent from the field and forcing 16 turnovers per game with an average of 5.3 of them coming off steals.
“He’s one of the best offensive rebounders there is in college basketball”, Williams said of the Texas big man. “He gives them that guy inside that takes up so much space and takes away some of your offensive rebound baskets as well because of his rebounding”. The Tar Heels recently beat then-No. It went in. In the waning seconds of the half, Davis drove and threw up a tough, contested shot and it went in to cut the Tar Heel lead to 44-42 at the half. He and Isaiah Taylor, who had 18 points and five assists, made for a terrific combo in keeping Texas moving, in keeping Texas throwing counter punches against a UNC squad that should threaten for a Final Four later this season.
“I would think it’s a change in what they’re doing and it’s hard to get them where Shaka wants them to be, I’m sure, but it’s good enough that we worked press offense yesterday and we’ll work press offense again today”, Williams said.
It is still early in the season, but the matchup between the Texas Longhorns and North Carolina looks like a preview for a round in the NCAA Tournament. The ball dropped straight to Felix, who calmly put it in. He scored 12 points, and several came on nice post moves when the Longhorns went inside. UNC sophomore Justin Jackson had 15 points.
Tar Heel center Kennedy Meeks will be matched up with Ridley. The last time these two schools faced each other was the 2013-14 season in Chapel Hill, and Texas left North Carolina with an 86-83 victory.
