Sylvester Stallone receives Golden Globe nomination for supporting role in ‘Creed’
The nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday morning, and the television categories were dominated by series from digital outlets Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, leaving traditional broadcasters and even cable programmers in the dust.
Best television drama series nominations include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix’s Narcos.
“The Big Short” co-stars Christian Bale and Steve Carell along with Damon (The Martian), Al Pacino (Danny Collins), Mark Ruffalo (Infinitely Polar Bear) are vying for a Golden Globe in the best actor – musical or comedy category.
The actor also congratulated Alicia Vikander and Alexandre Desplat – who were nominated for Best Actress, Drama and Best Original Score.
Apart from “Carol”, the other best motion picture drama nominees are “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, harrowing kidnap tale “Room” and “Spotlight”, which recounts the Boston Globe’s investigation into sex abuse in the Catholic Church.
Mark Rylance, who dazzled as spy Rudolf Abel in Bridge of Spies, earned a nomination for that film performance, as well as a nomination for his performance in the TV miniseries Wolf Hall.
Fassbender is up against Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Eddie Redmayne and Bryan Cranston in his category at the awards, which will be hosted by Ricky Gervais. She was nominated for both best actress in a drama for her performance in The Danish Girl and best supporting actress as the human-seeming robot in Ex Machina.
“The Irish film industry boasts some incredible talent and it is great to see this recognised internationally”, said Arts Minister Heather Humphreys. In other film news of geeky interest, The Martian received a nominee for best motion picture in a comedy/musical.

Out of Netflix’s three nominated shows, Orange is the New Black and Narcos rounded up two nominations per program, while the dramas House of Cards and Bloodline and the comedies Master of None and Grace and Frankie each received one. Hit shows such as Empire, Fargo and American Horror Story: Hotel helped Television Studios FX and Fox Broadcasting win nine more nominations.
SURPRISE: Rachel Bloom, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Like last year’s pioneering nominee for The CW, “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez (also nominated again this year), charming “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Bloom scored a major nom for a net that usually struggles to get awards attention.
Though actors have earned Golden Globes and Oscars for reprising a role – Peter O’Toole won the Golden Globe for his performance as Henry II in 1964’s “Beckett” and 1968’s “The Lion in Winter”, Stallone is the only one who has waited four decades to return to the nomination circle.
