Australia v West Indies: Adam Voges hits 174 & Shaun Marsh 139
Warrican (3-158) was one of two West Indies bowlers with paceman Jerome Taylor (0-108) to concede more than a hundred runs during Australia’s innings, although Kemar Roach (0-99) was saved from the indignity only by the declaration.
Adam Voges continued his dream run against the West Indies, bringing up his third Test century.
The first Test will be played at the Bellerive Oval here from Thursday.
Lyon celebrated his 50th Test with quick wickets – including two in five balls – to leave the Windies reeling at 4-81 by tea.
Hobart has hosted 11 Australia Tests since their first against Sri Lanka in 1989, but the city is not on the annual rota of Test venues like the mainland Australian capital cities.
“We are very upbeat about this series”. Once we do that we can put together a strong collective effort.
Holder, however, has manfully stuck to the line that his eighth-ranked side can upset those odds, even after being hammered by a Cricket Australia XI featuring six first-class debutants in a warm-up game in Brisbane last week. “We just have to be consistent in what we do”, said Holder.
“Why are we changing a game that has been around for a long, long time?” he told Sky Sports Radio, suggesting commercial interests were being prioritised over players, with talk also in recent weeks about playing four-day Tests to boost dwindling crowds.
“Holder also tried to turn the heat back on to the Australians, by highlighting some perceived weaknesses. We will go out there, do the best we can and give them a good run”.
“There is a little bit of grass on it, so I think the seamers will get a bit out of it and I think the batters will have to step up”, Smith said.
“We thought we were in a good position before lunch but the partnership between Voges and Marsh put us right on the back foot”, Warrican said.
The West Indies failed to press on after getting the prized wickets of David Warner (64) and skipper Steve Smith (10) before lunch with an unbroken 136-run fourth-wicket partnership.
“Patto’s a quality bowler”.
“He’s there to do a job, to score runs for the team”, Smith said.
“It has to start somewhere, we just have to be consistent in whatever we do”.
“He just needs to go out and do what he does well”.
The 24-year-old Hazlewood said on Tuesday he wanted to play all three Tests in the series, however, and selectors have given him a chance to lead the pace attack in the absence of Starc.
However the former fast bowler is insisting that given the expectation of the Australian public, the home side is the one under pressure to perform. “It’s something I’ve been working really hard to try and do and I got 99 a year ago [against India], so to get to three figures on home soil was pretty special”.
“I have not anxious about that sort of stuff”. I am sure he’s going to be around the squad this summer and he’ll get an opportunity to play at some point.
