Louis van Gaal defends Manchester United’s toothless attack
They say statistics don’t lie and when it comes to Premier League football this season, they don’t make for pretty viewing for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils were heavily criticised after last Saturday’s goalless draw at West Ham United, their eight game in which their failed to score goals.
Manchester United will be looking for the goals that have been so hard to come by this season when they travel to VfL wolfsburg on Tuesday with their hopes of sealing qualification for the Champions League knockout stage still hanging in the balance.
A draw could see United through to the last 16, provided PSV Eindhoven do not beat CSKA Moscow, but Van Gaal said: “It’s very important to win – we don’t want to rely on the result in the PSV game”.
“You can not expect a player of 20 years old to score in the Premier League every week”.
“We have created enough chances to score, so that was not the problem”. “[In] the Champions League, you could be out and that is bad for everybody, for the club, for the players and for the manager”. “They are a very good team and it’s never easy in Germany but we will prepare for this game as though it was the final of the Champions League”.
In order to win United will need to score, something they’ve had trouble doing this season.
Nick Powell is relishing being part of the Manchester United first team set up.
‘As you know, this Tuesday we have a really important game.
“That’s why we have that belief”.
The 20-times English champions have played five 0-0 draws in their last nine matches in all competitions and the Old Trafford faithful, who are not accustomed to such sluggish performances have shown their frustration on a number of times by jeering the team.
I didn’t expect that.
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking has not been fooled by pre-match words from Louis van Gaal who has questioned German World Cup victor Bastian Schweinsteiger’s United form saying: “Until now we haven’t seen the best of Schweinsteiger, the player I saw at Bayern Munich”.
“If we play like we did in the second-half against Dortmund, I am sure we will win against United”. You can’t win every year or every game.
