Netflix tops all TV networks for Golden Globe nominations
It was nominated for best picture, as well as best drama, best original score and Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in it, is one of the Golden Globe nominees for best actor.
“In a sharp reversal of past patterns, Netflix, a relative upstart, captured eight television nominations, beating HBO, which had seven”, the Times wrote about Thursday’s announcements.
The eventual winners are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and announced in a ceremony on January 10. Ruffalo, however, was nominated for best actor in a comedy for his performance as a bipolar father in Infinitely Polar Bear.
The Golden Globes TV categories this year had some… unexpected names. Amazon.com’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Prime Video tied for fourth with the FX cable channel, owned by 21st Century Fox (NASDAQ:FOXA), with five nominations each. On the TV side, the Globes continued to distinguish themselves from the Emmys by recognizing a raft of newcomers (like streaming series such as Netflix’s “Narcos” and “Master of None”, Hulu’s “Casual” and Amazon’s “Mozart In the Jungle”) and snubbing traditional favorites (sorry, “Homeland”, “Mad Men”, “Downton Abbey” and “Modern Family”).
Michael Fassbender, best actor nominee for “Steve Jobs”: “This film, and working with Danny Boyle and our wonderful cast, has been one of the most creative and incredible experiences of my professional life”.
In the best director category Ridley Scott (The Martian), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (The Revenant), Tom McCarthy’s “Spotlight”, Todd Haynes’s “Carol” and George Miller for “Mad Max: Fury Road” have been nominated. This is the 73rd year for the Golden Globes awards.
Speaking after the nominations were announced, he said: “I am incredibly grateful to the HFPA for having included me in such a brilliant troupe of actors”.
“Love Me Like You Do” (50 Shades of Grey), “One Kind of Love” (Love and Mercy), “See You Again” (Furious 7), “Simple Song #3” (Youth) and “Writing’s on the Wall” (Spectre) are part of the best original song list. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best motion picture drama on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015.
Game of Thrones is the sole survivor from last year’s best drama list, and this year’s includes Narcos (Netflix) and Outlander (Starz), along with the less surprising Empire and Mr. Robot.
And Spotlight was perhaps too much of an ensemble piece for the Globes.
The Golden Globes are chosen by a group of around 90 journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, rather than members of the film industry.
Next in line for the most nominations was Adam Kay’s “The Big Short”, a financial comedy.
David O. Russell’s matriarch portrait “Joy”, won nods for best picture, comedy, and best actress for Jennifer Lawrence, a Globe victor the last two years. Both were nominated for best actress in a comedy, and their films _ “Spy” and “Trainwreck”, respectively _ will compete for best comedic film.
At least screen veteran Sylvester Stallone, who was left out of Wednesday’s SAG nominations, earned a spot in the best supporting category for reprising his role as Rocky Balboa in “
