German Chancellor Angela Merkel applauds Paris climate agreement
ISIS terror group’s chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been named as one of the runners up for Time’s “Person of the year”.
We are indeed glad that 2015 will end on a great note as Angela Merkel has created history by being named the Person of the year. She even does the groceries herself and pays in cash.
In late August, when tens of thousands of migrants fleeing war in the Middle East streamed into Hungary, threatening a humanitarian crisis, Merkel agreed to suspend the European Union’s asylum rules and allow them to continue into Germany.
“Her response to that was extraordinary, and a lot of people say out of character, but really tectonic”, said Vick.
At the time the victor was announced on NBC, Baghdadi was the runaway victor in that online survey with some 64% of the vote. She has a doctorate as a physical chemist and has entered politics during the 1989 revolutions. After the initial influx, Germany reintroduced temporary checks at its borders within Europe’s sprawling passport-free Schengen zone, triggering what Pascouaud called a domino effect, as other countries followed suit.
The magazine said the German chancellor had “stepped in” every time a serious crisis had threatened European statecraft this year. As one of the world’s more powerful government leaders, Merkel wields influence across the continent, so it’s not surprising her official home reflects a certain pomp and circumstance.
The other individual women to win were Wallis Simpson (1936), Queen Elizabeth II (1952), and Corazon Aquino (1986), as reported by BBC.
She has a degree in physics and a doctorate in quantum physics, and she was the only woman in the theoretical chemistry section at the East German Academy of Sciences.
The venerable American magazine lauded Merkel as the indispensable player in managing the prospect of Greek bankruptcy threatening the Euro zone, and the migrant and refugee crisis. In 1990, she was elected to Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, and within a year she gained her first Cabinet post.
Trump responded to Merkel’s selection on his Twitter account, saying that he wasn’t surprised that Time hadn’t picked him, “despite being the big favorite”. Trump is now facing a domestic and global backlash for his proposal to ban Muslims from traveling to the United States.
The seven other finalists for 2015 included Donald Trump, the Black Lives Matter protest movement and Uber’s CEO, Travis Kalanick.
