McGregor open to Aldo rematch but keen on lightweight move
Long Story ShortConor McGregor didn’t disappoint his huge fanbase going into UFC 194 and knocked out longtime featherweight champ Jose Aldo with a left hook just 13 seconds in.
“Nobody can take that left hand shot”, McGregor said after the fight, as quoted by USA Today.
“I knew he would over-extend, and I knew I would catch him”. That’s when, among other things, McGregor swiped Aldo’s featherweight championship belt during a press event. The whole fight lasted just 13 seconds, one second faster than Ronda Rousey’s record of 14 seconds, for the fastest title fight in UFC history. He also said that he thought a rematch was in order because “it was really not a fight so we need to get back in here”. Aldo had not lost in 10 years and was riding an 18-fight win streak.
Conor Anthony McGregor, the Irish fighter has always talks about him and his greatness and many people don’t love it, nonetheless he may beat Chad Mendes.
“The options are there now… But when you combine it all together, when you combine the whole package, the whole animal, that is the fight game, I don’t think there’s nobody that does it better than me”, McGregor said, via FOX Sports.
McGregor will move next to either a featherweight title defense against Frankie Edgar, or a move up in weight for the lightweight belt.
The crowd roared as McGregor – clad in green compression shorts – entered first, with “Ole Ole” chants from the stands competing with his Notorious B.I.G. entrance music. The end came soon after.
The word from his team is that he’s not insane about making 145 pounds, which should make sense to anyone who’s seen the completely different face he dons every time he does it. UFC President Dana White said he’d give McGregor an immediate crack at the lightweight title if he insisted on going up to 155 pounds.
In the co-main event, No. 1 contender Luke Rockhold dethroned middleweight champion Chris Weidman.
He seized control of the fight when Weidman attempted to throw a wheel kick in the third round.
McGregor’s emphatic TKO set up a title fight between the two biggest superstars of the sport.
Rockhold, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, won for the fifth straight time in the UFC.
Rockhold and Weidman, who was taken to hospital to be checked out, each collected a $50,000 bonus for fight of the night.
UFC 194 concluded an unprecedented three-day stretch of three fight cards on the Las Vegas Strip.
It was the culmination of a rivalry between Aldo and McGregor that commenced earlier this year.
The California fighter earned a fourth-round stoppage over his NY rival with strikes on the ground.
“It didn’t affect me at all… we’ll have to come back”, he added. However, the champion Aldo suffered a rib injury prior to the bout and was forced to pull out at the last-minute. He wished we’d listened when he tried to warn us about the power of his left hand. That inability to understand how value is created and leveraged in the fight business?
