Zach Johnson wins the British Open in a playoff
And now, with a final-round 66 on the Old Course, followed by a 1-under-par effort in the aggregate playoff, Johnson’s name is engraved alongside the likes of Jones, Snead, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson, Woods, Mickelson and many, many more.
“I made a mental mistake”, said Spieth.
It was playoff time at St. Andrews on Monday with Zach Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman – all tied at 15 under – battling it out over four holes to be named Champion Golfer of the Year at the 2015 British Open. Johnson heads into Monday’s final round in a tie for sixth with a 9-under-par 207, three shots back.
Spieth now goes to the PGA Championship with a tiny piece of history left to chase.
His shot hit on the green and rolled back down into the bumps of the Valley of Sin.
Johnson came in as a 100-to-1 longshot, which translates as “under the radar”. Thank you for your support, belief and all your prayers.
“I’m grateful. I’m humbled”. But I don’t want to make it more than it is. “Towards the latter part of my career, I was doing them for pars”. It won’t be my legacy. But my legacy should be my kids, my family, that kind of thing.
So playing the Deere didn’t kill Spieth’s chances for the Grand Slam.
“I’m still in the mix and I’ve got to go out and get off to a quick start”. “It’s kind of hard to not hit a good one on that hole”.
Leishman is 30 feet from the hole and three-putts for bogey. I’m just a little frustrated because I just walked off the course about five minutes ago. “My speed control was really what cost me this week”. “I’m just a guy from Iowa that has been blessed with a talent and this game provides great opportunity”, added Johnson. I know Tiger has done it, and I’m sure Jack has. So that would be the next goal as far as the history goes.
On 16, yet again, you could have thrown a napkin over Spieth and Garcia’s drives.
Spieth is one shot off the lead and playing in the next-to-last group with co-leader Jason Day.
Johnson had a one-stroke lead on Louis Oosthuizen going to the final hole of the playoff.
He was the first in at 15-under 273. Then Oosthuizen birdied 18 to join the fun.
On a tense afternoon of shadows and showers on the Old Course, Johnson closed with a 6-under 66.
English amateur Ashley Chesters had two birdies and an eagle through five holes.
The three players had a quick break before heading to the first to get the four-way play-off underway and the South African, along with Johnson, sank birdies while Leishman’s par putt lipped out and he recorded a bogey.
Torrential rain on Friday and winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour on Saturday meant the championship would finish on Monday for just the second time, but conditions were nearly flawless for Sunday’s delayed third round. “I had four three-putts today”, said the 32-year-old.
He made another at the second, after driving onto the putting green over by the New Course.

“It takes me back to when I turned professional”, he said. “But I love it around here”.
