Obama vows to defeat ISIS
But he vowed to “destroy ISIL and any other organisation that tries to harm us”.
As a father of two daughters, Obama said, he could imagine himself or his kin in San Bernardino or Paris. It marked a reversal from his more cavalier comments about comparing the Islamic State to “a JV [junior varsity] team” previous year and boasting last month that ISIS was “contained” just one day before the Paris attacks. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death, and they account for a tiny fraction of more than a billion Muslims around the world – including millions of patriotic Muslim Americans who reject their hateful ideology. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has said, “I believe the president must come to Congress to begin a war and that Congress has a duty to act”.
Obama has used the Oval Office as a backdrop, a favorite of past presidents, just three times since taking office seven years ago. It was a speech about how Obama’s policies were right all along.
When the president asks the television networks to set aside time for him to broadcast a speech from the Oval Office, we can usually expect that he has something new to say. Going into the speech, many knew that ISIS didn’t order that directive, but the fear was about what would happen following the attack – and what the government was doing to address it. Marco Rubio, a Republican presidential candidate, said on Fox News.
“And that’s why I will urge high-tech and law enforcement leaders to make it harder for terrorists to use technology to escape from justice”. Still, he called on Muslims in the USA and around the world to take up the cause of fighting extremism.
He called for Muslims to confront radical ideology.
Obama also said that the battle against terrorism can not be fought by targeting law-abiding Muslims in the U.S.
“We also need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons like the ones that were used in San Bernardino”. Obama says it’s a matter of national security to prevent those people from getting guns. On Thursday, the Senate rejected legislation barring people the government suspects of acts of terror from purchasing firearms.
Obama repeated his long-standing opposition to an American-led ground war in the Middle East and made no mention of the more aggressive action others have suggested, including enforcing a no-fly zone and safe corridors in Syria. “If we’re to succeed in defeating terrorism, we must enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies rather than push them away through suspicion and hate”, Obama said.
President Obama gave his reaction to what happened in san bernardino. Conducted before the shootings, the poll also found that 60 percent disapprove of Obama’s handling of terrorism.
He noted that he has ordered several new measures to help defeat the group: more airstrikes, more advisors and trainers, and special operations teams – “boots on the ground”, albeit in small numbers and not yet on the ground – to target Islamic State leaders. The President will provide an update on the ongoing investigation into the tragic attack in San Bernardino.
