Eagles coach: Murray upset with carries but no undercutting
But the all-time Eagles rushing leader won’t shake Kelly’s hand Sunday when he and the Buffalo Bills oppose the coach who traded him, and the Eagles, this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
McCoy claims he’s not bitter and doesn’t “hate” Kelly after the trade that sent him from Philadelphia to Buffalo for former Oregon Ducks linebacker Kiko Alonso in March, but he sure sounds bitter and hateful, very bitter and hateful.
“He didn’t have a meeting with [Lurie]”, Kelly during a press conference call with reporters ahead of Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, via NFL.com’s Albert Breer. At his locker Wednesday, a towel draped around his neck, surrounded by cameras and recorders, McCoy repeated he has nothing to say to Kelly. “He knows this. That’s why he said it. I know him”. “Obviously, it’s been a tough year for myself and the team so far but we’ve still got a chance…” We have a way that we do it that I think is the right way to do it, and it wasn’t exercised in that case. “No hatred. But I stand by it. I don’t take it back”. I got hit earlier in the game, like on a two-point play or something. I then called Sam. He then called Nick. Murray’s also averaging only 3.5 yards per carry.
Reports surfaced Monday that Murray aired his frustration to Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie.
Murray went on to struggle throughout the season, and in last week’s colossal game against the New England Patriots, he only saw 14 snaps.
Murray said he didn’t seek out Lurie, and that they have sat next to each other on flights before.
Each time Murray was mentioned in the same sentence with Lurie, Kelly tended to jump the question the way a cornerback jumps a pass route. He can’t say s– to me. I’m different. I speak how I feel. The problem for the Cowboys is that there’s $31 million, including $9 million guaranteed, remaining on the final four years of the deal with the Eagles. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for him”. “A hundred percent, yes”. He isn’t upset about a big team win, or that the Eagles are vying for a playoff berth, but he’s a pro athlete that wants to deliver for those around him. “When I signed on the dotted line, I knew I was going to be here for a long time and I committed to winning a lot of games here”. That’s his territory. So when he watched Herm Edwards blow his lid over LeSean McCoy’s pointed criticism of Chip Kelly on “NFL Live” Wednesday, Smith must’ve felt like his style was being cramped.
“There’s no reason for us to shake hands”, McCoy said. “[But] we aren’t best friends or nothing like that”. That made me who I am.
“It’s one of those things, you don’t really talk about it because you can’t look toward that game until that weeks comes up”. Ryan Matthews, who has missed the last three games due to a concussion, was back practicing on Tuesday. “I’ve never been in this situation before”. At first I loved the signing because DeMarco Murray was the number one running back on the free agent market. I just don’t think shaking hands. Everyone loves to make plays. It hurts me that they put their own identity, their own egos in front of the team. “But he’s not frustrated that we beat the New England Patriots and we had a big win in New England”.
The soap opera continues Sunday when the Eagles play the Bills.
Shortly after McCoy offered some of his strongest quotes yet about Eagles coach Chip Kelly, Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas cautioned McCoy about getting too emotional. So the Cowboys would ultimately have to see if Murray gets cut in order for that to happen.
