Taylor Swift trying to patent ‘1989’, title of her novel
Swift’s name, signature and initials already have trademark protection. Enlisting all of her famous friends, she gave them all alter egos and started releasing posters of them ahead of her highly-anticipated premiere at the Billboard Music Awards. But since the New Year is days away, Swift plans to end the year with a bang by trademarking casual phrases.
She is also attempting to trademark “1989”, which is the name of her album, according to the application.
Tay has just put forward legal applications to the US Patent Office to trademark “Swiftmas” – that time of year when she sends Christmas gifts to her fans and pays off their student loans and spreads festive cheer all over the world. “And I’ll write your name” comes from a lyric from the song “Blank Space”.
For background, A Girl Named Girl is the name of an unpublished novel Swift wrote when she was 15 and “Swiftmas” is what I’ll be telling everyone I’m celebrating on December 25.
As per BBC “Swiftmas” is a word being used when fans would describe her good deeds.
The request to trademark “1989” only applies to the stylised way it appears on Swift’s album cover.
It adds to a raft of applications submitted by the singer’s management earlier this year for lyrics including “this sick beat” and “Nice to meet you, where you been?”.
