Donald Trump Rips TIME Over Person Of The Year
Corazon Aquino, President of the Philippines was named Woman of the Year in 1986 (when the title was still labelled “Man of the Year” – TIME changed it to “Person” in 1999).
The magazine says the German Chancellor has been chosen because of the leadership she showed in the way she reacted to various European crises in 2015.
“Not once or twice but three times there has been reason to wonder this year whether Europe could continue to exist, not culturally or geographically but as a historic experiment in ambitious statecraft”, Time editor Nancy Gibbs wrote.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, was named today as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for her contributions with the Greek crisis and the fight against the Islamic State.
The popular German Chancellor mingled with drinkers and snapped a selfie before heading into her accommodation, surprising her security staff and delighting fans. Time noted her leadership this year in leading the West’s response to Vladimir Putin’s “creeping theft of Ukraine”. Leaders are tested only when people dont want to follow. Times Magazine started to come up with the list of Person of the Year from 1927.
Only five women in history have been honoured with the title – not including the TIME Person of the Year award in 1975 which was dedicated to all American women. They picked person who is ruining Germany.’ Quite a mature move.
Mrs Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said: “I am sure the chancellor will cherish this as an incentive in her job”.
Donald Trump, who was actually on the cover of Time in August, took the news as an opportunity to disparage Merkel’s leadership on Twitter.
Other finalists shortlisted for this year’s award included Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, Black Lives Matter activists, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, U.S. entrepreneur Travis Kalanick and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner.
