Donald Trump dominates USA presidential race
A new CNN poll gives Donald Trump a massive lead in the Republican presidential race. Interviews were conducted with 930 registered voters, including 445 who are Republicans or independents who lean toward the Republican Party. And New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie rounds out Republicans’ top five presidential picks, grabbing 4 percent voter support.
Two months ago, Carson topped the Monmouth survey with 19 percent support, but his poll numbers have been in free-fall in recent weeks following a number of gaffes in the area of foreign policy and security.
When Trump stated that a Black Lives Matter demonstrator at a Birmingham rally for the POTUS candidate should’ve been “roughed up a bit”, people condemned the Don, but his lead in the polls didn’t drop a point. A headline accompanying an article about Trump’s appearance read “Trump courts Republican Jews with offensive stereotypes”. Among the GOP voters with college degrees, the contest is close between top 4 contenders with Cruz holding an edge at 22%.
And, CNN notes, the polls come after Trump has balanced between one controversy or another, and amid predictions from both parties that he would not last. For voters who think terrorism is extremely important, 49 percent back Trump to lead the fight against ISIS. Respondents also picked Trump as the most trusted to handle the federal budget, illegal immigration, the Islamic State group and foreign policy. Cruz comes in at distant second at 12 percent, followed by Carson at 11 percent.
On immigration, an issue that has been a focal point of Trump’s campaign, most Americans say the government should not attempt to deport all people living in the country illegally (63%), and even more say such a mass deportation wouldn’t be possible (81%).
“We certainly have learned some facts that are concerning and weigh on our minds”, Marco Rubio said early in his speech before the Republican Jewish Coalition presidential forum.
“When you’re leading in the polls, I think it’s too big of a risk to not do the debate”, Trump told The Washington Post Thursday at a Trump National Golf Club in Virginia.
Before beginning his speech, the Texas senator requested a moment of silence for the victims of the Wednesday morning attack – an attack which left at least 14 dead and 21 injured, according to San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.
The latest general election polling data from Real Clear Politics between Trump and Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton finds the former First Lady with only the narrowest of margins (0.6 percent) at 44.3 percent of the vote compared to the Donald’s 43.7 percent.
