Line technology proposed for Champions League
“It was discussed in depth today and we decided that a decision on the use would be taken in January at the next executive committee meeting”, Infantino told a news conference after an executive committee in western Paris.
Goal-line technology is likely to be used during Euro 2016 as well as in next season’s Champions League, with UEFA saying a final decision will be taken at the end of January 2016.
There are practical issues to overcome. UEFA would still have to decide which system to use and many more stadiums would need equipping with their technology. But while bringing in goal-line technology for the first 24-team European Championship in France should not pose a problem, doing so for the Champions League and Europa League represents a logistical challenge.
“If it happens for Euro 2016 then it will also happen for the club competitions for next season, the Champions League and Europa League”.
“If it is for the Euro this season, it will be for club competitions as from next season”, Infantino said. Euro 2016 organizer Jacques Lambert promised all necessary lessons will be drawn from the November 13 attacks.
Speaking on the eve of the finals draw in Paris, four weeks to the day after the attacks that left 130 dead, Patrick Kanner, minister for youth and sport in Francois Hollande’s government, said that France had a responsibility to host a great tournament.
The French Ministry of the Interior has accelerated the certification process for private security firms in order to ensure they can meet demand for the tournament, which kicks off next June.
The teams will share €301m (£217m), compared to the €196m distributed at Euro 2012. All 24 will get a minimum of 8 million euros ($8.8 million) each, plus prizes for wins.
Teams progressing to the knockout phase will receive €1.5m in the last 16, €2.5m for getting to the quarter-finals and an additional €4m for reaching the semi-finals.
For the final, which will be played at the Stade de France on July 10, the winners will receive eight million euros while the runners-up will pocked five million.
