UFC, McGregor enjoy record-setting night at MGM Grand

Aldo, who heading into the match was regarded as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the organization, was quick to call for a rematch and a chance to make amends for the premature stoppage.

Just 13 seconds had gone by when McGregor connected with a spectacular left hook punch that dropped Aldo to the canvas, completely knocked out.

He said: “Jose has been a phenomonal champion, my respect to Jose, I wish him well, and it’s on to the next chapter”.

After headlining his first UFC show in July 2014 with a win over Diego Brandao, (The Notorious) Conor McGregor delighted his hometown fans in Dublin by saying: “We’re not here to take part, we’re here to take over”.

“I think I am the pound-for-pound No. 1”, McGregor said. I believe that after this fight we have to go for a rematch, it is not done yet.

McGregor has always said that he plans to return to lightweight, where he competed before, and did quite well, earlier in his career.

Saturday’s gate was US$10.1 million with UFC officials predicting one of the promotion’s biggest, if not the biggest, pay-per-view audience.

It remains to be seen what McGregor decides to do regarding his weight class – he vowed that he would not vacate his featherweight belt – but it seems like Aldo has no shot at a rematch.

In the months between then and Sunday’s showdown, McGregor bombarded the Brazilian with taunt after taunt but Aldo denied the constant trash talk was a distraction.

“In the fight game, when you travel around for so long, Christmas is taken from you many times – but this time Christmas is not taken from me, so I get to go home”, McGregor said.

“Nobody can take that left-hand shot”, McGregor said.

“I understand why previously they would do that, because other fighters don’t fight as frequently as I do”.

“Tell me one time I’ve not turned up the next day fresh”.
