It’s back to Manziel
Johnny Manziel is going to be the starter for the Cleveland Browns once again.
With upheaval on the horizon, players, coaches and executives are uneasy.
“They have continuity, ” Pettine said. “That’s what losing does to you”.
Manziel was the backup to Austin Davis during Sunday’s 37-3 blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. “John-ny, John-ny” chants rang out at half-empty FirstEnergy Stadium in the second half Sunday.
“It begins with a detailed evaluation of everything we do, because the knee-jerk reaction when things don’t go well is that everything’s wrong, ” Pettine said. But it’s hard for the team’s decision-makers to be unified with the losses mounting, he said. “I think we all expected it the Browns are bad right, they’re awful but at the end of the day a win’s a win”, said Bengals fan Michelle Reynolds.
“For people to question the want-to and the passion to get it fixed – we’re upset with it. Maybe I don’t show it outwardly – that’s not my personality”. “I felt that we did that”. “We have been able to do that since I’ve been here and we need to keep that going”.
If Pettine switches back to Manziel, it would be the fourth quarterback change in five games.
Davis completed 25 passes on 38 attempts, throwing for 230 yards.
Pettine will meet with his offensive staff before making another switch.
Namely, not everyone is pulling in the same direction when it comes to turning things around for the 2-10 club.
The 22nd overall pick in last year’s draft, Manziel was named the starter for the rest of the season November 17, two days after he passed for a career-high 372 yards in a 30-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But he spent part of the bye week partying after telling Pettine and others he wouldn’t be a distraction and was dropped to third string. In addition, Jay Glazer reported that Manziel lied to coach Mike Pettine when confronted by the team about the video.
Earlier on Monday, the news broke that the Browns were planning to turn back to Manziel as the starting quarterback, but Pettine shot that down – at least for another day.
He’ll likely have the final four games to make a statement about his future with the Browns. “When we go one the road, we have that extra focus”, Dalton said reflecting on the achievement.
“We know what it’s supposed to look like and it’s frustrating for a variety of reasons why we can’t get it there, but as I said before, we have a plan to get it fixed”. Four games, that’s a quarter of a season, that’s a good chunk of time. The Browns, as a whole, are just an absolute disaster, and adding Manziel back to the starting lineup is simply a means to see what he has and maybe boost waning ticket sales.
