22-0 Warriors keep streaking, tie record for best road start
He was in coast mode early before draining a 30-footer in the second quarter, then putting it into another gear late in the third.
Nets: With owner Mikhail Prokhorov in attendance, the team opened a six-game homestand, its longest since moving to Brooklyn in 2012.
Curry made both his free throws and Toronto turned over the ball with 3.3 seconds to play. It is possible during Tuesday’s game that George will get a few possessions where he is guarding Curry, which should provide plenty of drama for basketball fans. His most influential work was done in the final moments of the third quarter. The Nets, who let Friday’s game slip away from them early, responded with a season-high 38 points in the second quarter.
Then Steph Curry, what else but the 3.
Referring to Curry’s uniform number, Green said, “Thirty was 30”.
“It’s pretty purposeful, just trying to see if I can get some room and figure out a way to impact the game”, Curry said of being more aggressive in the third.
“Things started to click”. We were down three at the time or something like that, so we just needed a little life.
DeRozan missed one of his two and Lowry had a chance at a three-point play but missed the and-one. As he ran down the court with Barclays Center roaring all around him, he stuck out his tongue and smiled.
“I have great memories of being here watching my dad play”, Curry told reporters after the game. Pundits are now comparing the rising star to the all-time greats and the team to the legendary “95-’96 Bulls”. But Curry, who shot an uncharacteristically low six times in the first half, scored on an acrobatic baseline jumper and pull-up three in consecutive possessions to give the Warriors a 79-76 lead. Draymond Green had 22 and Klay Thompson had 21.
In Minneapolis, Damian Lillard overcame a slow start to finish with 19 points and seven assists, and Portland rallied from 17 points down in the third quarter to beat the Timberwolves.
The Nets, however, didn’t go quietly.
Thaddeus Young scored 25 points and Brook Lopez added 18 for Brooklyn, which lost by eight in overtime on November 14 at Golden State after Lopez missed a potential game-winner in regulation. Still, with less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Nets barely were within shouting distance, trailing by 15. Those were the last points they would score in that frame, as the Nets went on a 12-0 to close it out, capped by a Joe Johnson three that made it 57-54 Warriors.
Even though Golden State did not reach basket as much as they usually do, their defense stepped up and made all the difference in the game. But Golden State once again showed it will take a full 48 minutes, possibly more, for an opponent to take it down. “They wouldn’t be 22-0 if they weren’t a good team, and they wouldn’t have won the championship, so you’ve just got to find a way to run them out of the 3-point line, make plays and make other guys mess up”.
The Nets were shorthanded, as rookie Rondae Hollis-Jefferson sat out Sunday’s game with a sprained right ankle.
