Packers’ Super Bowl odds improve after Hail Mary win over Lions
The pass traveled 61 yards into the waiting hands of tight end Richard Rodgers, who somehow found space in Detroit’s defense to make a miracles catch.
Richard Rodgers caught eight passes for 162 yards for Green Bay, which had its 56-game streak of scoring in the first half snapped as they rallied from a 20-point deficit. “But once I saw it in the air I realized I could get it”, he said afterward.
They were literally done at the 0:00 mark of the game when Rodgers was tackled on the last portion of a series of laterals in an attempt to replicate the play made famous by Rodgers’ alma mater, the Cal-Stanford “Band Is Out On The Field” walk-off touchdown.
“I’ve never had a completed Hail Mary before”, Aaron Rodgers said.
Then, a face mask penalty put the Packers in close enough range to deliver a Hail Mary…which Rodgers delivered in miraculous and grand style.
To be fair, Aaron Rodgers said the Packers would normally have a running back in the game to block, so their personnel grouping was abnormal. It gave the Packers one more play with no-time on the clock. “We just didn’t make the play”. It always rivals ‘The Play’.
The offense didn’t rack up a lot of yards, but they looked good.
-C Corey Linsley left the game Thursday during the second quarter with a knee injury, adding to more woes for an already banged-up offensive line. I mean it’s hard to throw the ball 70 yards. The Play is a big thing for me. Why weren’t any Lions players standing at the goal line trying to bat the ball down before it reached the end zone?
McCarthy said Thursday night’s win is his team’s greatest regular season win and not only because of that huge rainbow of a pass Aaron Rodgers launched, “you know, the reaction on the sideline, that’s the stuff you’re going to remember”. “That’s just me being a dad”.
“We weren’t in a position to get our hands on it”, Caldwell lamented. “It was awesome to see”. What can I say about Crockett? He lost his starting job to James Starks, but then appeared to get things back in gear over the past two weeks despite a few fumbles.
Rodgers Sr.’s career has been defined by the The Play, and now one moment will always be attached to his son’s career. “I told him that was a big-time play”, he said. “It’s a really special moment for him and I was kind of thinking on the play before, when Aaron got the facemask, I was kind of thinking we would do something like that”.
Rodgers (12) throws a hail mary during the fourth quarter against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
