“Clothed Women Have A Moment:” The Pirelli Calendar Gets A Feminist Makeover
Leibovitz said: ‘When Pirelli approached me, they said they wanted to make a departure from the past.
The calendar features no nude portraits – though Schumer and Williams were both shot in their underwear – and no provocation in the posing.
Amy Schumer, the 34 years old American comedian and actress has been one of the faces in world who has inspired women to appreciate their real self.
In a promotional clip for the calendar Schumer said the photoshoot made her feel confident in herself.
“I felt I looked more lovely than I’ve ever felt in my life”.
In addition to Schumer, tennis star Serena Williams, writer Fran Lebowitz, “Selma” director Ava DuVernay, artist Yoko Ono, Chinese UNHCR goodwill ambassador Yao Chen, founder of Rookie magazine Tavi Gevinson and musician Patti Smith participated.
The complete calendar will be unveiled tonight in London.
“I started to think about the roles that women play, women who have achieved something”, Leibovitz stated.
Last year’s calendar featured Karen Elson, Anna Ewers, Isabeli Fontana, Gigi Hadid, Candice Huffine, Adriana Lima, Sasha Luss, Cameron Russel, Joan Smalls, Natalia Vodianova, Raquel Zimmerman. The Pirelli calendar has always celebrated women-but this year’s images do so in a new, empowering way we’re totally on board with.
Asked whether the photos had been subject to digital enhancement after the shoot, Leibovitz said: “There’s very little work done on this, it’s done black and white…There might be a little cleaning up, but they’re pretty straightforward. It became a very strong set of very simple portraits”.
Leibovitz said: “I’m a great admirer of comediennes”. For the renowned photographer, she had wanted the pictures to show the women as transparent as they were, with no pretense. Where the iconic calendar traditionally features top supermodels, mostly in the nude, the 43rd edition celebrates 13 women successful in art, writing, philanthropy, filmmaking and sport instead.
