Windies all-rounder Samuels suspended from bowling for 12 months
However, on Monday Samuels faced another blow as has been banned from bowling in global cricket for a period of 12 months by ICC for suspected bowling action.
The much maligned 34-year-old all-rounder was already being savaged by media critics for his apparent lack of effort during the West Indian demolition derby in Hobart – with Samuels registering scores of just 9 and 3 in the game.
And Samuels made contributions of 9 and 3 runs as Wet Indies replied first with 223 and following on 148 all out with opener Kraigg Braithwaite standing out with 94 as the Caribbean side plunged to an innings and 214 run defeat. The Off spinner underwent an independent assessment in Brisbane which revealed that his elbow extension exceeded the permitted 15-degree limit. But due to a mistake by the International Cricket Council (ICC), he was allowed to bowl even after the 14 days period and he was selected because of that.
Samuels’ ban followed that of spinner Sunil Narine, who received a suspension in November after being reported during the Windies’ third one-day global with Sri Lanka last month. After working on his action, he was allowed again to bowl in September 2011. He was subsequently allowed to bowl the off break delivery but not his quicker ball.
The ICC Spokesperson said that the law says that a bowler can not bowl after having his action declared illegal for the second time and he would not be able to get his action tested too within 12 months.
