Haley calls for unity as KKK plans weekend rally in South Carolina

Two groups representing the Ku Klux Klan and the New Black Panther Party plan to rally at the South Carolina capitol Saturday in spite of the fact that the Confederate battle flag has been brought down there.

People living in the Dorchester Walyn neighborhood in North Charleston found KKK fliers on the windshields of their cars Wednesday morning. A police report has been filed with the North Charleston Police Department.

“I just felt it was important that we reassure the community out there”, Cannon said.

Local news sources reported that the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan left the fliers in predominately black neighborhoods. He urged people who see unusual activity in their neighborhood to call law enforcement.

The flyers appeared less than three weeks after nine people were shot to death at a historic black church in nearby Charleston.

Cannon said, in many cases it’s not clear who is making the threats.

“If you can’t tell, they are trying to wipe us out of the history books”, the message reads.

The agencies hope to alleviate those fears by ensuring the community that they are taking the threats seriously, Cannon said.

NAACP Charleston Chapter President Dot Scott applauded the press conference and the effort to reassure the public that law enforcement is taking the threats seriously and will actively investigate them.

Scott said vague threats are not new for the group, but these have reached the level of deadly violence.

The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan has a permit to rally on the north lawn of the State House on Saturday from 3 p.m.to 5 p.m. The group plans to demonstrate in support of the Confederate flag.
