Will Johnny Manziel get another chance to start?
Stats aside, watching McCown play this season was a relief after so many years of paltry play at the quarterback position.
The Browns are last in the division at 2-9 and have now lost 14 of their last 16 games stretching back to last season.
Pettine said he will consult with others, but made it clear that the decision on who will start at quarterback on Sunday against the Bengals will be his alone.
“These are two players that we both want to see play”.
Josh McCown started last Monday’s game but is out for the season after suffering a broken collarbone.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Austin Davis (7) looks to pass against the Baltimore Ravens during an NFL football game Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, in Cleveland.
Indeed, Davis completed seven of his 10 passes against the Baltimore Ravens for 77 yards and the game-tying touchdown on a a 42-yard strike to Travis Benjamin in the game’s final two minutes. Manziel, who finally got a hold of the quarterback position so the Browns can finally decide if he’s good enough to keep developing showed that his off the field problems aren’t going away.
Already without the services of starting quarterback Sam Bradford because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee suffered in a preseason game against the Browns last August, the Rams started Shaun Hill under center.
McCown was already dealing with injuries heading into the game, but the benching of Johnny Manziel meant McCown was back in the starting role. “I said, ‘If we get a block and it bounced my way, I’m going to take it to the end zone.’ Luckily, it did”. But then Manziel was allegedly caught partying during the Browns’ bye week, then reportedly tried to lie to his coaches about it.
“It was nearly a game of redemption”, said John Harbaugh, head coach of the Ravens.
Pettine said of the 33-27 defeat, “I can’t imagine too many game-ending scenarios that would make you feel worse at the end than that”. The Ravens blocked that kick and returned it for a touchdown as time expired.
McCown, 36, finished the year completing 63.7 percent for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 93.3 rating.
