7th grader told his Star Wars shirt isn’t allowed in school
School district officials told KTRK News that the shirt was in violation of dress code in which “symbols oriented towards violence” are prohibited.
Southern had to put on his jacket and wear it during the school day, and isn’t allowed to wear the shirt to school anymore.
The school administrators said they did not reprimand Colton, although they could have required him to change or suspended him. However, the action may also have been a little too exaggerated since not only is a blaster rifle a fictional weapon used by fictional soldiers, but Colton’s shirt is a very obvious reference to the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, which is days away from its theatrical release.
He wrote: ‘Star Wars shirt banned at school! However, his teacher told him to zip up the T-shirt and not wear it again as it represents a weapon.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in New Zealand on Thursday.
Colton’s father Joe said that the school violated his son’s First Amendment rights and that his son would not hurt anyone.
“He’s a Boy Scout, active in church, volunteers at Brazos Bend State Park”, he said.
The parent of Texas middle school student is up in arms after his son was forced to cover up a Star Wars-themed T-shirt that his son was wearing, as it was deemed inappropriate by school officials – an incident that the frustrated father called “political correctness run amok”.
“He’s just an excited kid for the movie”, his dad said.
