Microsoft Makes OneDrive Free Storage U-Turn
If you use Microsoft’s cloud storage locker, it probably didn’t escape your attention that at the start of last month, Redmond made a miserly move and announced a future cut in OneDrive storage space across the board – but fortunately, it seems the company has thought better of this highly unpopular move.
Incidentally, those who were on the unlimited storage tier will be reduced to 1TB, and Microsoft isn’t changing anything on that front. Moreover, the company offered to pay a full refund to anyone unhappy with the decision to not offer unlimited storage.
Now, it appears that the Windows maker will revoke the decision with respect to free OneDrive storage offer.
OneDrive users became a bit upset when Microsoft chose to stop giving Office 365 subscribers their promised unlimited storage due to the fact that a lot of users (according to the company) have been “abusing” this space by uploading their entire movie and music collection, audio recordings, and other heavy bandwidth files.
Microsoft last month announced its plans to reduce the free OneDrive storage from 15GB to 5GB.
Those who used OneDrive’s free service to store more than 5GB of content will receive one free year of Office 365 Personal, which includes 1TB of storage. In a note to users, Douglas Pearce, group program manager, wrote that Microsoft was sorry for the “frustration and disappointment” the decision caused. However, this won’t be done on all accounts, users will have to opt for this option or they will lose their free storage. That’s why we’re making it possible for you to keep your base storage quota and camera roll bonus, even after the changes roll out. “For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community”, he wrote.
It’s worth repeating: You have to sign up to keep your Free 15 GB of OneDrive Storage before January 31st, 2016. The OneDrive website also mentions that “you’re an important part of what we do, and we want to make sure you know that”.
