The blustery New Yorker’s proposal this week to ban foreign citizens who are Muslims from entering the USA for an indefinite period of time was just the latest example of Trump connecting with a large portion of the Republican base, moving the debate in previously unthinkable ways and putting his rivals in a tough position.
KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR: What I’m trying to say is that although Mr. Trump isn’t committing the violence, when the violence happens, he exploits it. OK, so instead of offering a practical and realistic solutions, he’s exploiting people’s fear and he’s doing ISIS’s work for them.

Trump has led in almost every national poll for months, though his solid lead in the key early state of Iowa is being threatened by Cruz – who recently topped Trump in an Iowa poll out this weekend.

Trump is at 41% in a Monmouth University poll out Monday, holding a wide advantage over his GOP challengers.
That discrepancy is another cause for nervousness among Republicans. “Nobody knows if these folks will actually show up in the nomination process, which creates uncertainty and nervousness in GOP ranks”. But many Donald Trump supporters are angriest at a group of white Christians.
