Check Your internet Speeds, AG Says
New Yorkers can test and then submit data on the internet speeds they are receiving at home.
If you live in NY and think you’re broadband Internet connection isn’t as fast as it should be, the state wants to know.
Schneiderman’s staff has constructed the new site for Internet consumers to determine their “throughput” speeds – the speeds by which customers reach content. After logging on and following the instructions, the user can submit a screenshot of the results.
Schneiderman’s office said it was concerned that customers paying a premium for higher speeds may be experiencing a disruption in their service due to technical problems and business disputes over interconnection agreements. If you live in NY, it might not be just you.
“New Yorkers should get the Internet speeds they pay for”, he said.
The three service providers said that they are confident in what speeds they are providing consumers with, adding that they will work with the AG’S office to provide all information necessary. Too many of us may be paying for one thing, and getting another, ‘ he said in a statement.
The new website drew praise from consumer groups such as Common Cause/NY.
The implications of the case, of course, extend well beyond NY.
The state is using a broadband performance test website, according to Reuters, that lets users check their Internet speed.
The three companies in the spotlight are Time Warner Cable, Verizon and Cablevision.
