Commissioner rejects Pete Rose’s plea for reinstatement
Sure, he’d still be baseball’s all-time hits leader either way, but the specter of his sentence ever looming over his shoulder has added an element of curiosity that keeps the crowds coming. But, if Baseball is Americas past time then it would have solved this problem by responding with Integrity and Trust when it came reinstating Pete Rose a long time ago. Rose clearly wanted back in baseball – his overtures to Manfred make that obvious – but he obviously wants to bet on baseball even more.
At that meeting, according to Manfred’s report, Rose eventually admitted he still bets on baseball to this day, having tried to deny it earlier in the conversation. It also means he’s lied more times than Frank Abagnale.
“My initial reaction was I think it’s a shame”.
Now that we’ve cleared all that up, can we talk about hypocrisy? On a personal level, we find the Hall of Fame component of that to be unfortunate.
But it is hypocritical. Selig was a lot kinder to Rose though and allowed him to at least show his face during some big moments.
Rose, now 74, has been banned from baseball since 1989, when it was revealed that he bet on baseball.
Manfred also said Rose has never “seriously sought treatment” for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Behavior, conditions he said in his 2004 book had afflicted him.

The suspension went into effect in August 1989. If Manfred wants to condemn his betting on baseball, then fine, I’m okay with that.
Yeah, that’s DraftKings, or the daily fantasy sports company that thrives on its Average Joe sports-fan gamblers pouring millions of dollars into its pocket every day. Not that I was surprised about it, I have been expecting for the last two months that the commissioner would rule in the manner in which he did today. The courts vehemently deny that, hence the ban. The only constant in these efforts is Pete Rose doing what, at the time, seemed best for Pete Rose. The money is flowing, and that’s all that really matters.
“In my view, the considerations that should drive a decision on whether an individual should be allowed to work in Baseball are not the same as those that should drive a decision on Hall of Fame eligibility”, Manfred wrote. Not surprisingly, that is just Manfred putting the onus on the BBWAA and shifting responsibility away from his office. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. Rose gambled, and he lost. He was a 17-time All-Star, National League Most Valuable Player in 1973 and won World Series titles with the Reds in 1975 and 1976 and with the Phillies in 1980. When Casey sold the shop, he became a partner in Hit King Inc. and rented space in the Art of Music store at Mandalay Bay, where Rose has been signing for the past five years.
